Relocating the Historic Motorsport Shed –
Ockham, Surrey to Goodwood, West Sussex

Some projects come with prestige, and this was one of them. The Tyrrell Shed, an iconic part of motorsport history, needed a new home. Originally standing tall in Ockham, Surrey, it was time for it to be relocated to the legendary Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex. But here’s the twist—every plank, panel, and piece of memorabilia had to be moved without losing its historic essence.

But was it going to be easy? Not a chance!

The challenge: Obstacles we faced

Moving a historic structure comes with its own set of obstacles. This wasn’t just about shifting a structure but about preserving history. Once home to the Tyrrell Formula 1 Team, the shed had weathered time, but its asbestos roofing needed replacing, and the windows were beyond repair. The goal? Dismantle, transport, and rebuild—keeping the soul intact.

The solution: How we made it happen

We knew precision was everything. Rushing was not an option. Every detail had to be accounted for before the first nail was removed. So, we devised a meticulous plan:

  • Systematic dismantling: Each timber panel, roofing section, and fixture was labelled, logged, and carefully removed in a sequence that would allow for seamless reassembly.
  • Asbestos-free upgrade: The original asbestos roofing was replaced with a safe, durable corrugated cement roof, ensuring longevity while maintaining the shed’s authentic look.
  • Restoring the classic Touch: The original hardwood windows were beyond saving, so we replicated them precisely to match the shed’s heritage.
  • Preserving memorabilia: Internal features, including motorsport relics, were safeguarded throughout the move, ensuring they remained exactly where they belonged.

Bringing it all together: The final stage

With 2.5 weeks of non-stop precision work, the Goodwood Tyrrell Shed returned to life in its new home. We reassembled every labelled piece with millimetre precision, ensuring that when it stood again at Goodwood, it looked as if it had never been moved. And, of course, every motorsport relic inside remained untouched.

The project wrapped up with Goodwood Motor Circuit getting exactly what they envisioned—a piece of motorsport history, relocated and revived without losing an ounce of its original charm. Hence, mission accomplished! The Goodwood Tyrrell Shed is home once again.
